  • Family Reading Night

    What is Family Reading Night?

It is important for parents to create an early love of reading in their children. Family Reading Night is a simple yet powerful activity you can introduce in your own home to foster the habit of reading with the whole family.

    How does it work?

  • Simply set aside one night a week in your household and call it “Family Reading Night.” Establish a time allotment that works for your family; for example, 30 minutes or an hour.
  • Minimize interruptions from TV, computer and video games and turn on the answering machine.
  • Choose one book for the entire family to read aloud together, or encourage individual family members to choose their own books to read quietly.
  • For pre-readers, a good choice might be Story Reader©, which magically reads the story aloud as the child turns the pages.
  • Read more about Kathy Ireland, the national spokesperson for family Reading Night.
  • Finally, sit down, relax and READ!!
  • Why should my family have a Family Reading Night?

Studies show an alarming decline in reading rates among all age groups in America, especially among our young. Our children are bombarded on a daily basis with multiple forms of entertainment that compete with traditional learning.

However, kids naturally emulate the adults in their lives, and seeing their parents and other family members enjoy reading is a powerful motivator. Establishing and keeping a Family Reading Night helps families reclaim special time together and helps form lifelong reading habits that will drive later success in school and adult life.

Young children are impressionable and are influenced at a very young age by their environment and the adults in their lives. And studies show that avid readers are more successful in their education and more engaged in society. So why not set the right example for your children and give them the tools they need to start off on the right foot? Make the right choices for your child by starting a Family Reading Night, and encourage a love of reading in your home!

Creative Ideas for the Littlest Readers©

You can never start too early to instill the love of reading in a child. Here are some tips for the littlest learners in your household to enjoy Family Reading Night:

  • Choose books about topics or themes your child loves, such as animals, insects, sports, or favorite characters.
  • Start slow©experts say that even 15 minutes of reading is of benefit to your young child.
  • Keep it interesting and don't limit yourself to fiction. Kids can get excited about reading nonfiction, too, or even magazines.
  • Make the night special: Include other special treats such as a favorite meal, snack, or dessert as part of the ritual.
  • Motivate! Keep a sticker chart where kids can win a sticker for each book they read and see their progress each week.
  • Keep books and other supplies where kids can reach them.
  • Comment aloud on what's happening in the book, or make sound effects (such as animal noises) to make the story come alive.
  • Experiment with different formats. Try books on tape or Story Reader© (which reads the story aloud as the child turns the pages, allowing them to control the experience). These are great ways to encourage reading with youngsters.
  • How can I make Family Reading Night fun for the whole family?
Here are some creative ways to make Family Reading Night an enjoyable activity for everyone in your household:
  • Make it democratic: Take a family trip to the library to choose books for the occasion. Involving the kids in the decision gives them ownership and helps generate excitement.
  • Create a cozy nest! Pick a special spot in the house and pile up the pillows, blankets and stuffed animals for a cozy reading area.
  • Easy does it: Minimize your own workload with an easy dinner beforehand on paper plates, and have everyone pitch in on clean-up.
  • Feed the habit©Intersperse reading with fun snacks and drinks the whole family can enjoy.
  • Keep it interesting: Take breaks to play games that involve reading, such as “Life,” “Careers” or “Clue.”
  • Interact! Read aloud or let your children tell their own stories.
  • Make it crafty: Incorporate crafts into your Family Reading Night, such as making fancy bookmarks with felt or construction paper and crayons!
  • Kids love contests! Encourage playful competition: Whoever reads the most in a given month gets breakfast in bed!
  • Invite special guests for Family Reading Night, such as grandparents, young cousins, or your kids' friends.
  • Start a Family Reading Night Book Club in your neighborhood! Circulate a list of suggested readings, and have get-togethers to discuss the books with neighbors.
  • Tie your reading themes with a holiday; for example, read about pilgrims at Thanksgiving.
  • National Spokesperson: Kathy Ireland

    Dear Parents, Families and Educators:

Family Reading Night is an outstanding opportunity to foster a love of reading with your child that will last a lifetime. Does your child love reading? Is reading (or being read to) an activity your child would choose over TV or video games? Most likely, your answer is “no.” In fact, a recent study by the National Endowment for the Arts shows that reading in America is in dramatic decline, with the steepest downturn occurring among the youngest age groups.

Although many American families recognize the importance of reading with and to their children, too few have incorporated dedicated reading time into their busy household schedules. Family Reading Night is a simple but powerful way to reclaim precious family “together-time” while developing positive, lifelong reading habits in your children that could have a dramatic impact on their education and their future.

Please join me in creating a Family Reading Night in your home!

    Thank you,

    Kathy Ireland

  • Confirm that you have taken the remote out of programming mode. Note: The light at the top of the remote should be OFF. The remote will not function until it is taken out of programming mode.
  • Confirm that you are holding the button on the ActiveMinds® remote down, waiting for the light to go off, and then pressing the corresponding button on your DVD remote. Note: If you do not wait for the light to go off, the button will not program.
  • Confirm that you are pointing the remote at the DVD Player and not the TV. Note: If the DVD Player is in a cabinet, the doors must be open for the ActiveMinds® remote to function.
  • Confirm you are using a traditional DVD Player. This product will not work in a computer.
  • Confirm that your DVD Player remote has numbers on it; otherwise the ActiveMinds® remote may not be able to be programmed. We recommend that you look at the manual that came with your DVD Player to see if there is an alternate method to use an equivalent key.
  • Confirm that all buttons programmed correctly. If only a few buttons programmed correctly, please go back and attempt to re-program the faulty buttons a second time.
